Leave is one of the most personal, complex, and consequential experiences an employee can have—and one of the most operationally challenging for growing companies to manage well.

As a mom of two boys, I know how quickly life can change—whether it’s the joy of welcoming a child, the stress of an unexpected diagnosis, or the emotional weight of caring for family. In those moments, people need clarity and compassion—not confusion, red tape, or silence from their employer.

Unfortunately, that’s still the reality for many. At growing companies, leave programs are often a patchwork. Policies vary, compliance is a moving target, and HR teams are left juggling complex regulations, documentation, and emotional support with limited resources. It’s unsustainable—and it doesn’t reflect the kind of culture most of us are trying to build.

When leave is handled well, it builds trust and reinforces your values. When it’s not, the impact lingers long after someone returns. That’s one reason I’m so proud to be part of the team at Sparrow.

We recently released our 2025 Leave Benchmark Report, drawing insights from over 30,000 managed leaves. A few key takeaways:

  • Caregiver leave is on the rise, driven by shifting demographics and the growing demands on the “sandwich generation.”

  • Non-birthing parental leave is expanding, with larger employers now offering a median of 8 weeks paid for this group.

  • 80% of companies with 50+ employees proactively apply the federal FMLA 50/75 rule to all employees—whether legally required or not—to minimize risk.

  • Leave utilization is climbing, from 6–8% of employees annually to consistently over 10%, fueled by more mental health, caregiver, and non-birthing parental leaves.

At Sparrow, we partner with People teams to manage the entire leave process—from compliance and documentation to employee communication and high-touch support. We also handle the filing of claims with state agencies and disability carriers on behalf of employees, reducing the administrative burden on HR teams and helping ensure a smoother, more supportive leave experience. I’m honored to support leaders in the StartupExperts community who are working hard to lead with care, clarity, and consistency—especially when it matters most.
